Clinical pharmacy, working collaboratively in mental health care

Clinical pharmacy, working collaboratively in mental health care was the theme chosen for this year’s conference, following the launch from the World Health Organization establishing a comprehensive mental health plan for 2013-2020! This plan Urges member states to implement the proposed actions adapted to their national and specific circumstances. The WHO also invites international, regional and national partners to take note of this comprehensive mental health plan. Portugal is the European country with the second highest prevalence of psychiatric problems, only surpassed by Northern Ireland. In fact, the burden of illness caused by mental health and behavioural disturbances in Portugal is 11.8%, higher than estimated for oncology. This year the symposium will have a virtual format. Nonetheless, being organised and supported by Portugal, to make you have the feeling you are there, we encourage you to watch the videos made available. The choice of theme is very relevant from an international perspective but also adapted to the Portuguese context. Allied to the celebration of the Mental Health day on the 10th October, instituted by the World Federation of Mental Health, the ESCP will want to engage in providing up-to-date science and education on clinical pharmacy by holding its annual conference in October, dedicated to Mental Health.

The 49th ESCP Symposium will provide attendees with the opportunity to be involved in the discussion around mental health issues in the context of clinical pharmacy. Features of interest include updates on dementia, depression, anxiety and psychosis treatment. Of highlight are also new concepts of “mental health first aid” and “precision mental health”. Aligning the conference with patient-centred pharmaceutical care, focus will be put on patient involvement in shared decision making. During the symposium, every day there will be a lecture focusing on pharmacotherapy updates, highlighting evidence-based therapy and controversies in the treatment of dementia, depression and anxiety. Other topics focused in plenary lectures will include: number needed to treat and number needed to harm in mental health; treatment of dementia-related pain; deprescribing of benzodiazepines; treatment of mental health using digital technology to reach the youth; comparing the benefits of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, to name a few. There will also be an extended workshop over 3 days organised by Young-ESCP. We welcome workshop proposals especially on related topics, such as: short interventions for substances of abuse; monitoring of psychotropic drug use in older patients; using analytical methods to understand risk factors for mental disorders; impacts of gaming in mental health; but also general themes, including: developing a research protocol; how to get an abstract accepted, to name a few. This year, having an online format, innovative and creative formats where interaction is assured are particularly welcome.

The ESCP Symposium is an excellent opportunity to present your scientific work (as oral communication or as a poster) or to virtually meet your colleagues.

WORKSHOPS

Workshop Proposals

As every year, ESCP members can submit a workshop proposal. The submission was closed on 31 May 2021 (Extended).

Workshops are an important component of ESCP Symposia and are usually run twice in each event. In the 2021 virtual Symposium there were 8 different workshops. These were related to Clinical Pharmacy practice or research and must have an approach that promotes interaction with participants. Preference will be given to workshops linked to the conference theme, which is "mental health". A Workshop time-slot is 1h30 and this year, given the online format, we also requested facilitators to include in their submission information on the proposed pedagogical methods and how these ensure interaction with participants.

The 1st Workshop moderator receives a free registration to the symposium and a workshop facilitator certificate. Other moderators are not entitled to any reimbursements but still will be awarded with a workshop facilitator certificate.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS

Abstract submissions

During the symposium, there will always be plenty of opportunities to share your research and practical work in clinical pharmacy with your peers, by submitting an abstract. These abstracts are reviewed by the ESCP Research Committee and the best ones get the chance to present either as poster format, short communication, or full oral communication. All abstracts are published in the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy (IJCP). IJCP is a Springer journal, published bi-monthly. It is a very reputed peer-reviewed journal that publishes original research data, new ideas and discussions on a broad range of topics related to clinical pharmacy. Its five-year impact factor is 2.054 (2019)..

Abstract submission is now closed; you can not submit an abstract anymore.
