Description

The aim is to discuss pharmacotherapy updates in heart failure and how pharmacists can contribute in the care and management of patients with heart failure.

The burden of HF is projected to increase by 46% by the year 2030. There are various traditional therapies for heart failure and also emerging therapies which are showing improved cardiovascular outcomes. Pharmacists have a crucial role in the care and management of patients with heart failure including medication reconciliation, identifying and following up care issues and drug-related problems, addressing adherence, patient and carer education, as well as interprofessional collaboration.

Dr Francesca Wirth is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Pharmacy, University of Malta (UM). Dr Wirthgraduated as a pharmacist in 2007. She completed a Master of Philosophy degree in 2011 with a dissertation that involved developing a quality system for clinical pharmacy services in a geriatric/rehabilitation hospital, and completed a PhD in 2015, with a dissertation on the pharmacogenetic implications of clopidogrel therapy, including application of a rapid point-of-care testing approach. Dr Wirth is actively involved in teaching and research and supervises undergraduate and postgraduate student research in pharmacy practice research related to of cardiovascular disease, pharmacogenetics and personalised medicine. This research has led to a number of peer-reviewed publications. Dr Wirth facilitates Erasmus+ mobility studies and traineeships for incoming and outgoing pharmacy and pharmaceutical technology students. She is co-lead in patient-focusedexperientials for undergraduate and postgraduate students and acts a preceptor for students undertaking cardiology clinical rotations. Dr Wirth leads clinical skills laboratory practical sessions on the preparation and administration of injectable medications and vaccines, as well as point-of-care testing practicals. Dr Wirth is a member of the Research Committee of the European Society of Clinical Pharmacy (ESCP).
