Learning objectives

After the webinar, participants should be able to:

  • To provide an overview of pharmacist practice settings within the UK

  • To describe the potential scope of pharmacist involvement in antimicrobial stewardship in different practice settings (i.e. hospital, primary care and community pharmacy)

  • To apply principles of antimicrobial stewardship to patient case scenarios presented.

Description

The overall aim of the webinar is to familiarize participants with the potential role of pharmacists to support antimicrobial stewardship in different practice settings.

 

Dr Tonna graduated with a BPharm (Hons) from the University of Malta in 1994. She then completed an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy at Robert Gordon University, Scotland and graduated in 2001. She has a strong hospital pharmacy background and was instrumental in introducing ward clinical pharmacy services in Malta and held pharmacy posts in Edinburgh and Oxford. She then went on to obtain a PhD at Robert Gordon University. She has been in the current academic post since 2010 and is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacy. 

Dr Tonna’s main area of interest is antimicrobial use and strategies that may be employed by the pharmacist to help optimize antimicrobial use and has published research conducted both within the UK and internationally. Dr Tonna has expertise in the use of qualitative methodologies as a way of exploring individuals’ views and perceptions in areas where there is limited evidence. She also has an interest in educational research, particularly in innovative teaching methods and research on how students best learn and has published and presented in this area. She is a founding member of NAPEG (National Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacy Education Group) set up in 2022. She has facilitated workshops at numerous international conferences both to practicing pharmacists and students and has extensive experience in PhD supervision. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy (IJCP).
