Learning objectives

After the webinar, participants should be able to:

  • How to interpret pharmacokinetic data.
  • Understand how pharmacokinetics impacts clinical practice.
  • How to construct simple pharmacokinetic models.

Description

The Irish word for road – bóthar – derives from the words bó (beast, or cow) and thar (over or across) which come together to describe the tracks that are left behind by wandering cows. The story goes that these tracks will twist and turn as the cows make their way around ditches, hills, and rivers to find fresh grass to eat. Back then, the Irish were reliant on cows for a large portion of their diet, so, they followed those tracks until they developed into the roads that are still in use today. This contrasts with the modern motorway, built in straight lines to get us from A to B as quickly as possible. This analogy draws parallels with modern Pharmacy practice, which places a strong emphasis on therapeutics. While we know that drug A will have the corresponding effect B, is there something to be gained from following the journey of a drug to its site of action (pharmacokinetics)?

This webinar will take the participants on a brief path which will illustrate how to integrate pharmacokinetic thinking in their clinical practice.

Oisín N. Kavanagh is a pharmacist and Senior Lecturer at the School of Pharmacy, Newcastle University and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He received the Gold Medal from the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland in 2017 and completed his clinical training in his hometown of Derry before moving to the University of Limerick to undertake his PhD. He was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to the School of Pharmacy, University of Michigan and – after a period of post-doctoral research based at Maynooth University – was subsequently appointed to a Lectureship at Newcastle University in 2021. His research interests are centred around the relationship between drug physical properties and their pharmacokinetics.
