Dr Antonella Tonna BPharm (Hons), MSC,SFHEA,PhDAssociate Professor

Dr Tonna graduated with a BPharm (Hons) from the University of Malta in 1994. She then completed an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy at Robert Gordon University, Scotland and graduated in 2001. She has a strong hospital pharmacy clinical background with over 10 years in this sector and was instrumental in introducing ward clinical pharmacy services and other services in Malta and held pharmacy posts in Edinburgh and Oxford. She then went on to obtain a PhD at Robert Gordon University with a focus on pharmacist prescribing of antimicrobials. She has been in the current academic post since 2010.

Dr Tonna’s main area of interest is antimicrobial use and strategies that may be employed by the pharmacist to help optimize antimicrobial use and has extensive publications of research conducted both within the UK and internationally.  She has extensive experience in facilitating workshops at numerous international conferences both to practicing pharmacists and students having facilitated ~22 educational events and has considerable experience in PhD supervision and examining. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy, a member of the Research Committee of the European Society of Clinical Pharmacy (ESCP), and current chair of the National Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacy Education Group (NAPEG).

Professor Derek Stewart

Professor Derek Stewart is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and past-President of the European Society of Clinical Pharmacy. He holds visiting professorships at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, United Kingdom and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Until August 2024, he was Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Practice at Qatar University. He is an internationally renowned educator and researcher, having published more than 300 peer reviewed papers, supervised over 30 PhD students to completion and attracted significant research income. His research focuses on:

  • the development, implementation and evaluation of models of pharmacy practice, notably pharmacist prescribing;
  • medicines use, effectiveness and safety;
  • educational innovation.

Learning objectives

After the webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the key requirements and expectations for abstract submission to European Society of Clinical Pharmacy conferences.
  • Identify common reasons for abstract rejection and critically appraise examples of unsuccessful submissions.
  • Apply principles of effective abstract writing to improve clarity, structure, and scientific quality.
  • Recognise the importance of early preparation and iterative revision, and explain why last-minute writing (“final hour scramble”) reduces submission success.
  • Evaluate and refine their own abstracts using structured feedback and discussion.
  • Formulate practical strategies for successful abstract submission, including planning, drafting, and revising.
